Treasures in the Hmong village

All they know is that, since they were born, they've seen these trees firmly rooted in the soil, covering patches of forest and hillsides near their homes, standing tall against the elements. Many say they are treasures bestowed by heaven and earth, preserved by generations of Hmong people amidst the verdant wilderness.

To the ancient tea region

Not far from the headquarters of the People's Committee of Hoang Thu Pho commune (Bac Ha, Lao Cai), there is a sign pointing the way to the ancient tea garden. Following the directions, we set off. Along the way, Chau Seo Phu, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Hoang Thu Pho commune, recounted: "When I was a child, I often visited and saw the endless green hills of ancient tea trees, blending seamlessly with the colors of the mountains and forests. In the stories of every Mong villager, the tea trees existed before they were born, witnessing their entire lives, yet remaining 'immortal.' A strange species of tree, breaking through the soil and rocks on this poor land, yet surviving for hundreds of years."

While Mr. Phử's story was still unfinished, we arrived at Chồ Chải village. Asking about the ancient tea gardens, the locals immediately directed us to the tea garden of Mr. Hàng Seo Mào's family, the household that still possesses the most ancient tea trees in the commune. Stepping through the gate, we felt as if we had entered another world, a boundless expanse of green, with cool, fresh air.

The Mong ethnic village of Cho Chai currently boasts the largest and most concentrated area of ​​ancient tea trees in Hoang Thu Pho commune. According to village head Vang Seo Cua, the village currently has about 2 hectares of ancient tea trees, with over 20 households still preserving these valuable trees. Among them, two households, Hang Seo Mao and Hang Seo Chua, have large, concentrated tea gardens, while the remaining households have scattered, sparsely distributed trees. Unlike tea trees elsewhere, the ancient tea trees in Hoang Thu Pho do not have many winding shapes; most trees grow straight with large, lush green canopies.

The season when the earth is fragrant

Trước đây, cũng như những hộ khác trong thôn, việc thu hái và bán chè cổ thụ chưa được gia đình ông Hàng Seo Mào xem như một hướng phát triển kinh tế, cây chủ yếu phục vụ nhu cầu của gia đình. Việc gìn giữ cây chè xuất phát từ những lời trao truyền, dạy bảo của đời trước tới đời sau rằng không được làm mất giống cây quý. Bởi vậy, dù sở hữu “kho vàng xanh” nhưng người Mông nơi này chưa biết cách để khai thác mà loay hoay, phân vân giữa việc giữ hay bỏ. Cách đây vài chục năm, vùng chè cổ thụ ở Hoàng Thu Phố bị bỏ không, lẫn cùng tầm gửi, cỏ tạp. Thậm chí sau này, nhiều gốc chè đã bị chặt bỏ để lấy chỗ cho những cây trồng khác, một số ít thì bị gia súc phá, lâu ngày rồi chết khô. Vùng chè ngày càng thu hẹp và chỉ còn một phần ít ỏi.

Some Hmong people here advise that if you're going to visit the ancient tea-growing region, you should go in late April. At that time, after months of sun exposure and dew, the spring tea buds will release a refreshing aroma. This cool, gentle fragrance permeates the soil, blends with the water, and is carried far by the wind.

In mid-May, the spring tea harvest ends, followed by a break before the summer harvest, which lasts from the end of June to the beginning of August. This is followed by a rest period to allow the plants to recover for the next harvest. For centuries, the tea plants in Hoang Thu Pho have thrived, nurtured by the earth and blessed with rain, accumulating the sweetness to create a unique tea with a refreshing, subtly sweet, and long-lasting aftertaste.

Vài năm trở lại đây, giá trị kinh tế của cây chè được “đánh thức”. Sản phẩm chế biến từ chè cổ thụ ngày càng được ưa chuộng trên thị trường, các hộ bắt đầu cải tạo vườn, chăm sóc những gốc chè quý và thu hái, bán ra thị trường với giá cao, có thời điểm lên đến 40.000 đồng/kg chè búp tươi. Chè cổ thụ ở xã Hoàng Thu Phố tập trung nhiều nhất ở thôn Chồ Chải, tiếp đó là Hoàng Hạ. Cùng với việc chăm sóc những gốc chè hiện có, một số hộ dân bắt đầu ươm giống từ những hạt chè cổ, thắp lại hy vọng về lãnh địa chè từng có ở đây.

Mr. Mao's family is the only household to date that has signed a product purchase contract with Bac Ha Energy Joint Stock Company for a term of up to 10 years, starting from 2021, due to the advantage of having a concentrated tea plantation and good quality tea.

Deputy Secretary Chau Seo Phu said: The commune pays special attention to caring for and developing an effective economic model based on ancient tea trees, and this has been included in the Resolution of the Commune Party Congress. Besides promoting and encouraging people to preserve and care for the existing tea plantations, the commune has a policy of integrating tourism activities in the ancient tea growing areas, but above all, it must ensure conditions that do not affect the development and quality of the ancient tea trees.

During the 2022 traditional horse racing festival in Bac Ha district, the first groups of tourists visited the ancient tea garden. Although this is just the beginning and it's too early to assess its impact, the local authorities hope this activity will contribute to the preservation and development of this centuries-old treasure, ensuring its sustainability over time.
