Theo tin từ Ban Bảo vệ, chăm sóc sức khỏe cán bộ Trung ương, nguyên Ủy viên Bộ Chính trị, nguyên Thủ tướng Chính phủ Phan Văn Khải đã từ trần vào hồi 1 giờ 30 phút ngày 17/3/2018 tại quê nhà Củ Chi, TP.HCM.

Trước đó, nguyên Thủ tướng Phan Văn Khải bị bệnh nặng từ trước Tết Mậu Tuất. Sau thời gian điều trị ở nước ngoài, ông được chuyển về bệnh viện Chợ Rẫy (TP.HCM).

Trả lời báo chí, lãnh đạo bệnh viện Chợ Rẫy xác nhận nguyên Thủ tướng Phan Văn Khải được chuyển tới viện vào tối 20/2/2018.

Former Prime Minister Phan Văn Khải was born on December 25, 1933. He was from Tân Thông Hội commune, Củ Chi district, Ho Chi Minh City.

Mr. Khai joined the revolutionary movement very early (from 1947), starting in the Children's National Salvation Team of Tan Thong Hoi commune.

In 1950, he joined the Gia Dinh Provincial Youth Union, the Front Office, and the Gia Dinh Ninh Provincial Party Committee Office.

From 1954 to 1959, Mr. Khai relocated to North Vietnam, participating in land reform activities and pursuing his education. Afterward, he was sent to study economics at a university in the Soviet Union.

In 1965, he returned to Vietnam and worked as an officer, deputy head, and then head of the General Affairs Department of the State Planning Committee until 1971. He was an economic researcher in the South, served in the B2 battlefield, and was Deputy Director of the Government Unification Committee (during the period 1972-1975).

From 1975 to 1984, he worked in the South, serving as Deputy Head and Head of the Planning Committee, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, City Party Committee member (1979), and Standing Committee member of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee.

From 1985 to 1989, he was elected Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, and Member of the Central Committee of the Party, 6th term (1986), during the early years of the reform period.

In April 1989, he moved to Hanoi to join the Government, serving as Chairman of the State Planning Committee. He was assigned by Prime Minister Do Muoi to lead the group drafting the Strategy for Economic and Social Stabilization and Development until 2000.

At the end of 1991, Mr. Khai was elected a member of the Politburo and Permanent Deputy Prime Minister of the Government.

In September 1997, he was elected Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

In May 2005, Prime Minister Phan Van Khai made a historic visit to the United States. This trip marked a new milestone in Vietnam-US relations, especially in the economic field.

In June 2006, Prime Minister Phan Văn Khải requested retirement one year before the end of his term.

In 2014, in Ho Chi Minh City, the Party Committee of the Government Office solemnly organized a ceremony to present the 55-Year Party Membership Badge to former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai.

After nearly nine years leading the government (1997-2006), former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai was regarded as a prime minister with many innovative ideas and contributions to reforms that promoted Vietnam's integration with the world.

Mr. Khai is also considered the successor who built a solid economic foundation, enabling Vietnam to integrate and develop with the regional and international economies in the future.
