The series "The Night Returns" is adapted from the novel "Madam Mei's Daily Pampering of Her Husband" by author Fu Hua. Set in Chang'an, the capital city where two worlds, human and demon, coexist, the story centers on the love affair between the demon-slaying Taoist Mai Zhuwu (played by Xu Kai) and Princess Wu Zhen (played by Tian Xiwei).

Mai Truc Vu is a talented young Taoist priest and the nephew of the noble Mai Phi. By day, he is an upright official, but at night, he is a member of the Thuong Hi Palace, tasked with subduing demons to protect the peace of the human world. During his demon-hunting endeavors, he inadvertently encounters the beautiful, wealthy, and pleasure-seeking Princess Vu Trinh.

What seemed like the beginning of a classic love story turned out to be Vũ Trinh's true nature: she was a cat demon. Not only that, she was also the leader of the demons in Nhật Lý Vạn Cơ – a bustling land of mystical entertainment, and also the rival of Thường Hi Palace.

While sharing the same theme of "fated connection" between demon hunters and demons as Eternal Night Star River, Purple Night Return seems poised for even greater challenges. In Eternal Night Star River, Zi Qi gradually learns to control his "half-blood" demon nature with the help of Miao Miao. Ultimately, the two understand and stand by each other despite their differing identities.

In Tử Dạ Quy, Vũ Trinh is the leader of all the demons in Nhật Lý Vạn Cơ, while Trục Vũ also carries the heavy burden of expectations from the imperial court and the human world. In the moment between reason and emotion, between protecting the collective and finding fulfillment with the one they love, what choice will they make?
