Ho Chi Minh City experienced hailstorm.

(VTC News) -

On the evening of August 22nd, Ho Chi Minh City experienced widespread thunderstorms, accompanied by hail.

This evening, Ho Chi Minh City experienced thunderstorms in the eastern area. According to data from hydrological stations, the average rainfall during the hailstorm ranged from 30-60mm, and temperatures fluctuated between 27-30 degrees Celsius.

Explaining this hailstorm phenomenon, Mr. Le Dinh Quyet, Deputy Head of the Forecasting Department, Southern Region Meteorological and Hydrological Station, said:Due to the subtropical high-pressure system encroaching westward, pushing large amounts of moisture from the sea towards the land, while also creating sunny weather and high air temperatures, the air undergoes strong turbulence. Upward-moving air currents (ascending currents) carry hot, humid clouds very high, beyond the troposphere. Upon reaching 0°C, water vapor condenses (freezes – similar to ice), falling to the ground and causing hail.".

According to Mr. Quyet, today's rainfall is quite unusual.Hailstorms typically occur in Southern Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City at the beginning of the rainy season (May, June) and near the end of the rainy season (late October)."Mr. Quyet added.

According to the Southern Vietnam Regional Meteorological and Hydrological Station, satellite imagery and weather radar at 18 PM showed convective clouds developing in Nha Be and Can Gio districts. The cloud system continued to develop and spread, causing heavy rain in districts 7, 12, Go Vap, Binh Thanh, Thu Duc City, and central districts 1, 3, 5, etc.

Currently, the low-pressure trough has its axis extending across 26-28 degrees North latitude. At high altitudes, the subtropical high-pressure system is encroaching westward. The Southwest monsoon is of weak to moderate intensity.

Over the next 24 hours, the intensity of the low-pressure trough, with its axis located at approximately 26-28 degrees North latitude, will remain relatively unchanged. The subtropical high-pressure system at higher altitudes will weaken. The southwest monsoon will not be strong.

Previously, according to the weather forecast from the Central Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting Center, Ho Chi Minh City and the southern provinces will experience sunny days and rain in the evenings next week. Daytime sunshine will not be too strong, with maximum temperatures ranging from 30-33 degrees Celsius.

In the late afternoon and evening, convective clouds will gradually develop more, causing thunderstorms over about half of the Southern region. Moderate to heavy rain is expected in some areas. During thunderstorms, people should be wary of tornadoes, lightning, and strong gusts of wind.

The southern provinces will experience scattered showers and thunderstorms. Cloudy thunderstorms are expected in the late afternoon and evening. The highest temperature will be 31-34 degrees Celsius, and the lowest 23-26 degrees Celsius.
