Tết Đoan ngọ còn được gọi là Tết Đoan dương. "Đoan" là mở đầu, "ngọ" là giữa trưa và "dương" nghĩa là mặt trời, thuộc khí dương. Thời điểm giữa trưa ngày Đoan ngọ là bắt đầu lúc khí dương dồi dào nhất.

Tết Đoan ngọ diễn ra ngày 5/5 Âm lịch. Năm nay, ngày này rơi vào thứ Hai 10/6 Dương lịch.

Tại Việt Nam, ngày Tết Đoan ngọ còn được gọi là ngày giết sâu bọ.

Thông thường, mâm lễ cúng Tết Đoan ngọ bao gồm những lễ vật sau:

- Hương, hoa, nước

- Cơm rượu nếp

- Các loại quả: Mận, hồng xiêm, dưa hấu, vải, chuối...

Nếu có điều kiện, gia chủ chuẩn bị thêm bánh gio (bánh tro) và chè hạt sen để mâm cúng thêm đầy đặn.

I bow down to the nine directions of Heaven, the ten directions of Buddha, and all the Buddhas of the ten directions.

I respectfully bow before Heaven, Earth, and all revered deities.

I respectfully bow before the local tutelary deity, the local earth deity, the household kitchen god, and all other revered deities.

I respectfully bow before my ancestors, my deceased father and mother, and all departed spirits (if my parents are still alive, replace them with my paternal and maternal ancestors).

Today is the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, the Dragon Boat Festival. We have prepared incense, candles, offerings, flowers, tea, and fruits to present before the altar. We respectfully invite the local tutelary deity, the great kings, the local earth deity, the household kitchen god, the five directions, the dragon vein, and the god of wealth to descend before the altar to witness our sincerity and accept our offerings.

We respectfully invite our ancestors, both paternal and maternal, and all the spirits of our family lineage... We humbly beg you to have mercy on your descendants, witness our sincerity, and accept our offerings.

We, your humble devotees, respectfully invite the former and current owners of this house and land to come before the altar, partake in the offerings, and bless us with good health, peace of mind, freedom from misfortune throughout the four seasons, and prosperity in all eight festivals.

We pay our respects with sincerity, pay our respects to the altar, and bow to ask for blessings and protection.

Con xin kính lạy ngài Bản cảnh Thành hoàng, ngài Bản xứ Thổ địa, ngài Bản gia Táo quân cùng chư vị tôn thần.

Con xin kính lạy tổ tiên cùng chư vị hương linh

Con tên là... (tên người đọc văn khấn Tết Đoan ngọ), ngụ tại... (địa chỉ nơi ở).

Hôm nay, ngày Tết Đoan ngọ, toàn gia chúng con sửa soạn hương đăng, sắm lễ vật, hoa đăng, trà quả để cùng dâng lên trước án. Chúng con xin kính mời ngài Bản cảnh Thành hoàng, chư vị đại vương, ngài Bản xứ Thần linh Thổ địa, ngài Bản gia Táo quân, Ngũ phương, Long mạch, Tài thần, cúi xin các ngài giáng lâm trước án, chứng giám lòng thành của chúng con và thụ hưởng lễ vật.

Chúng con kính mời các cụ tổ khảo, tổ tỷ, chư vị hương linh gia tiên nội ngoại họ... Con thành tâm cúi xin các vị thương xót con cháu, chứng giám tâm thành, thụ hưởng lễ vật.

Con cũng lại xin kính mời các vị tiền chủ, hậu chủ tại nhà này, đất này đồng lâm án tiền, đồng lai hâm hưởng. Cầu mong các vị độ cho chúng con thân cung khang thái, bản mệnh bình an, thịnh vượng. Mong bốn mùa không hạn ách, tám tiết hưởng bình an thịnh vượng.

Với lễ bạc tâm thành, trước án kính lễ, chúng con cúi xin được phù hộ độ trì.
