“A proposal to convert forest land in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has been put forward by DRDO. A request has also been sent to the Andhra Pradesh government to utilize reserve forest land in Nagayalanka,” Defence Minister AK Antony said in a written response to the Indian Parliament.
"Both projects to establish these missile test sites are in the initial planning stages, and land acquisition is underway," Antony said.
A DRDO official said the current missile test site in Orissa state is overloaded. These new test sites will be used for test launches of both short-range and long-range missiles.
Currently, military infrastructure in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has been upgraded. The Indian Navy is proposing to deploy a nuclear submarine and a landing ship to the archipelago in the future.
The Air Force has also decided to deploy Su-30MKI fighter jets to the archipelago and will increase the number of airfields there.
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands comprise a chain of 572 islands located less than 100km off the coast of Indonesia.
