If you have too many Gmail accounts but only need one, or the username of a Gmail account is no longer suitable, or you simply no longer want to use Google services, including Gmail, here are ways to delete your Gmail account.
There are two main ways to completely delete your Gmail account: delete only the Gmail account itself, or delete Gmail by deleting your entire Google account.
Things to note before deleting your Gmail account.
Essentially, once you complete the process of deleting your Gmail account, it cannot be recovered. All emails will be inaccessible, and all related settings will be completely erased. Additionally, your Gmail username will be deactivated and cannot be reused by anyone else, including you.
Therefore, before deleting your Gmail account, you should download a backup of your important Google data. Additionally, if you link your Gmail account to third-party websites such as social media platforms or online stores, make sure you transfer the link to a different email account so you can retain access to these services.

How to back up Gmail data before deleting it
To export a copy of your Gmail data, follow these steps:
1. On a computer, launch your web browser and access your Google account. If using a mobile device, open the Gmail app, tap your profile picture in the upper right corner of the screen, and select your account. Tap your profile picture again and select "Manage your Google account."
2. Go to "Data and Privacy".
3. Scroll down to "Data from the apps and services you use".
4. Under "Download or delete your data," select "Download your data." This will take you to the Google Takeout page.
5. In the list that appears, select "Mail". You might also consider selecting "Contacts" as this app may contain people's email addresses retrieved from the Gmail app.
6. Click "Next Step" and follow the instructions to create the export file containing your Gmail account data.
The duration of the entire backup process will depend on the amount of data accumulated. This process may take hours or even days to complete. You will receive an email containing a download link when the data export process is complete.
If your Gmail account was provided by your workplace or school, you may need to contact technical support or a system administrator to delete your Gmail email account. If your Gmail account is a personal account, you can delete it yourself using the methods below.
Just delete your Gmail account.
Essentially, the process of deleting a Gmail account is quite similar to the data backup process described above. After you have completed backing up all the necessary Gmail data, follow these steps to delete your Gmail account:
1. Access your Google account using a web browser on your computer and sign in with the Gmail account you want to delete. On a mobile device, you can launch the Gmail app, then tap your profile picture in the upper right corner of the screen and select the correct Gmail account you want to delete. Tap your profile picture again and select "Manage your Google account".
2. Go to "Data and Privacy".
3. Scroll down to "Data from the apps and services you use".
4. This time, under "Download or delete your data," select "Delete Google services." You will be prompted to re-enter your account password to continue.
5. Click the trash can icon next to "Gmail" to delete it.
Finally, to complete the process, you will be asked to enter a different email address, then click “Send verification email”. This email address will essentially replace your soon-to-be-deleted email account and allow you to continue using other Google services. This is also the email address Google will send a verification email to finalize the Gmail account deletion. This is how Google ensures that you have set up a new email address before completely removing your old email.
When you receive the verification email from Google in your alternate email address, click the delete link and sign in to the Gmail account you want to delete when prompted. After verifying that you really want to delete Gmail, click "Done".
Delete your Gmail and Google accounts simultaneously.
First, note that deleting a Google account is different from simply deleting a Gmail account. Deleting a Google account means that all your data across all Google apps may be permanently lost. Of course, you can still back up all the data from each Google app linked to your account, but this process will definitely take much longer than backing up just Gmail data.
If you're ready to delete your Google account, follow these steps:
1. On a computer, access your Google account in a web browser and sign in to the account you want to delete. If using a mobile device, open the Gmail app, tap your profile picture in the upper right corner of the screen, and select your account. Tap your profile picture again and tap "Manage your Google account".
2. Go to "Data and Privacy".
3. Scroll down to the "More options" section and select "Delete your Google account".
You may be asked to re-enter your password to continue. Follow the on-screen instructions and confirm the permanent deletion of your Google account and the linked Gmail account.
How to recover your Gmail and Google account
Immediately after completing the process of deleting your Gmail or Google account, a small window may appear allowing you to undo the action. However, this window only appears briefly; after that, data recovery and account restoration may not be possible.
To check if you can recover a Gmail account you just deleted, visit the website or launch the app on your mobile phone, log in with the deleted email address, and follow the on-screen instructions. If nothing happens, the account is considered inaccessible.
If you've deleted your entire Google account and want to try to recover it, go to the Google account recovery portal and follow the on-screen instructions. You may be asked to confirm certain details to ensure you own the Google account.
If your account is successfully recovered, you'll need to create a password you haven't used before to access it again. Otherwise, your account recovery period may have expired. In some cases, you may not be able to recover your Google account in the first place.
