According to the German newspaper *Business* on March 13, a majority of Germans oppose imposing economic sanctions on Russia in connection with the crisis in Ukraine, and a large proportion of Germans are concerned about the negative impact on the country.
Russian President Putin has previously stated that economic sanctions against Russia would backfire on the United States and the West.
The report cites the results of a public opinion poll conducted by the German-Russian Chamber of Foreign Trade, which indicates that, in the context of EU member states preparing to impose tougher sanctions on Russia, a majority of Germans oppose this approach.
As many as 69% of Germans surveyed believe that sanctions cannot resolve the current crisis, and only 24% support economic sanctions as a solution.
As many as 64% of Germans believe that the conflict in Ukraine could have negative consequences for Germany, and 57% blame the former Ukrainian government for the current escalation of tensions.
In particular, as many as 64% of Germans surveyed believe that Russia will not disrupt energy supplies to Europe.
