Has MERS been contained?

North Korea has just announced that it has developed an injectable drug that is effective in preventing and treating MERS virus and other infectious diseases.

North Korea They have just announced the development of an injectable drug that is effective in preventing and treating MERS virus and other infectious diseases.

South Korean news agency Yonhap reported on June 19, citing a report from the North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), that Pyongyang has developed a highly effective injectable drug for preventing and treating Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

The product is called "Kumdang-2"

The product, named "Kumdang-2," is manufactured by Pugang Pharmaceuticals using ginseng extract and rare elements. According to Jon Sung-hun, Director of Pugang, "this injectable drug is recognized for its effectiveness in preventing many serious infectious diseases."

KCNA added that those vaccinated with Kumdang-2 will not contract any infectious diseases, even if they travel to areas where such diseases are prevalent. "This means that Kumdang-2 is effective in combating the MERS virus."

However, observers believe that the likelihood of North Korea developing such a drug is very slim, as many North Koreans are still suffering from tuberculosis and other diseases amidst a lack of vaccines and a poor healthcare system.

Meanwhile, South Korea reported one more MERS death and one new case on June 19, bringing the total number of deaths to 24 and the number of infections to 166. As of June 19, 30 people confirmed to have MERS had fully recovered, and 5.930 people remained in quarantine.

The fact that there was only one new MERS case on June 19th is considered the smallest number since June 3rd, significantly lower than the dozens of infections reported the previous week. The South Korean Ministry of Health declared that the MERS outbreak in the country has "stalled."
