Russia 'figures out' the ATACMS missile guidance system.

(VTC News) -

Russian experts are studying the guidance and flight path correction system of the US-made ATACMS tactical ballistic missile.

Sputnik According to a Russian military expert: "There are three rotating laser gyroscopes in the ATACMS missile guidance system. These allow the missile to maintain its predetermined ballistic trajectory. There is also a GPS antenna, which enables missile corrections during the initial and final stages of the ballistic trajectory. We can analyze the operation of the missile systems at various stages of the flight path."

The US began supplying ATACMS ballistic missiles to Ukraine in 2023. The missiles are manufactured by Lockheed Martin and have a 610mm caliber, are 4m long, and weigh 1,6 tons.

In early April, the US secretly transferred ATACMS tactical missiles with a range of 300km, enabling Ukraine to launch a series of attacks on targets deep within Russian-controlled territory.

The Ukrainian military claims that ATACMS is a high-precision missile designed to strike critical Russian military targets such as airfields or command centers.

Russian military experts believe that, in order to prevent damage from ATACMS missiles in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Russia needs to intensify its efforts to hunt down and destroy M142 HIMARS multiple rocket launcher systems and increase the number of air defense systems.

The missiles in the ATACMS system can reach speeds of Mach 3.0 (1029 m/s) and have a range that extends to areas south of the Crimean Peninsula, and even into parts of Russia.

ATACMS was first used in Operation Desert Storm and has many variants, including those deploying cluster bombs or single warheads, allowing for diverse and effective tactical applications. According to experts, the US provision of ATACMS to Ukraine represents a significant policy shift by the Joe Biden administration regarding military aid to Kyiv.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict has dragged on into its third year and has become a war of attrition. A sense of weariness is emerging in the US and many Western countries that aid Kyiv. Numerous peace proposals have been put forward, but none have yielded results due to differing viewpoints between Russia and Ukraine.
