There's an old saying, "Offering sacrifices all year round is not as important as the first full moon of the lunar year." For Vietnamese people, the first full moon of the lunar year is a very important holiday, officially marking the end of the Lunar New Year celebrations. On this day, Vietnamese people usually express their reverence to their ancestors and worship Buddha by offering sacrifices.
Around this time, the market for fruit platters becomes very popular. Fruit vendors simultaneously release many fruit platters of various sizes, with prices ranging from 300 VND to 1,5 VND per platter. In some exceptional cases, platters cost 2-3 million VND, or even nearly 5 million VND.
The offering tray includes a watermelon carved with artistic characters, three bunches of bananas, one Buddha's hand fruit, seven oranges, three apples, a bunch of grapes, combined with five lotus flowers, pomelo blossoms, chrysanthemums, or orchids... priced at nearly 5 million VND. The offering tray includes 1 pear, 2 red-fleshed dragon fruits, 2 imported apples, betel nuts, betel leaves, 3 lotus flowers, and chrysanthemums for decoration, priced at 300 VND.
According to the vendors, customers mainly order offering trays for the full moon festival in the price range of 500 to over 1 million VND, while the more expensive trays are less popular.
This year, during the Lunar New Year's full moon, customers tended to place more orders online.
To ensure aesthetic appeal and secure the position of the flowers and fruits, all the fruit platters are fixed in place using specialized adhesive.
Some fruit vendors say that the prices of fruits and flowers haven't increased compared to last year, but the number of customers ordering fruit platters for offerings has decreased by about 20% this year. As a result, there's almost no longer the overload of orders that forced them to turn customers away like before.
An elaborately decorated fruit platter is offered as a sacrifice on the full moon of the first lunar month.
