North Korea launched two ballistic missiles.

(VTC News) -

The South Korean military said North Korea test-fired two short-range ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan on the morning of July 19.

The Japanese side also confirmed the information. Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada said the two missiles appeared to have fallen outside the country's exclusive economic zone, which extends approximately 370 kilometers from the coast.

Mr. Hamada added that each missile flew up to 600 km with a maximum altitude of about 50 km. According to him, the two North Korean missiles may have traveled on an unusual trajectory.

According to Mr. Hamada, the Japanese government has not reported any damage following the launch and has sent a diplomatic protest to North Korea.

The South Korean military said North Korea launched a missile from near Pyongyang's Sunan area between 3:30 and 3:46 a.m. on July 19.

Amid escalating tensions between Pyongyang and Washington, North Korea conducted a test launch of a Hwasong-18 intercontinental ballistic missile on July 12th, heading towards the Sea of Japan. According to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), the missile was launched at a high angle and traveled approximately 1.000 kilometers before crashing into the Sea of Japan.

Pyongyang's latest move comes after South Korea and the United States held their first meeting of the Nuclear Consultative Group in Seoul on July 18. The two sides agreed to conduct joint military exercises and war simulations to deter North Korea from using nuclear weapons.

A U.S. nuclear-capable submarine is visiting Busan port for the first time in decades to demonstrate the U.S.'s expanded deterrence commitment to South Korea.

The South Korean and U.S. militaries have recently expanded joint exercises in response to North Korea's provocative missile tests since last year.

Meanwhile, North Korea argues that it is compelled to intensify its testing activities in response to the expanded military exercises by rivals that Pyongyang considers a threat to its security.

Last week, a North Korean Defense Ministry spokesperson condemned the plan by the U.S. and South Korea, warning against such a move. "This could trigger a nuclear conflict crisis in the region."
