The US has suspended student visa appointment schedules.

(VTC News) -

The Trump administration has directed U.S. diplomatic missions around the world to temporarily halt scheduling new appointments for student and cultural exchange visas.

On May 27, the administration of US President Donald Trump directed US diplomatic missions worldwide to temporarily suspend scheduling new appointments for student and cultural exchange visas (F, M, and J visas).

This move is aimed at preparing for the expansion of social media vetting processes for student visa applicants. This information was stated in an internal cable from Secretary of State Marco Rubio to U.S. consulates.

"The Department is currently reviewing its practices and procedures for screening and vetting applicants for student and exchange visas (F, M, J), and based on that review, plans to issue guidance on expanding social media vetting to all such applicants." The content of the cable sent to US diplomatic missions around the world.

Accordingly, previously scheduled appointments will proceed as per current procedures. However, unbooked slots will be removed from the system until further notice. The U.S. State Department is conducting a comprehensive review of its screening processes and is expected to issue new guidance on social media vetting for all student and cultural exchange visa applicants.

State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce declined to comment on the cable but stressed that the U.S. would use "every tool" to assess those seeking entry into the country, including international students.

Speaking to reporters at the regular press briefing, Ms. Bruce said: "We will continue to use every tool available to assess who is coming here, whether they are students or not."

This move is part of the Trump administration's tougher immigration strategy, which includes increased deportations and the revocation of student visas. The administration has also taken action against students and organizations deemed critical of U.S. foreign policy, particularly in cases related to support for the Palestinians.

Notably, Harvard University had its right to enroll international students revoked, a move the university considers illegal and has filed a lawsuit against the federal government.

Additionally, the Trump administration also demanded the termination of remaining federal contracts with Harvard, estimated to be worth around $100 million, as part of a broader campaign to pressure educational institutions deemed to be non-compliant with government policy.
