Japanese Prime Minister contracts COVID-19.

The Japanese Prime Minister's Office announced that Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has tested positive for COVID-19.

He is currently resting and recuperating at his private residence.

Mr. Fumio Kishida recently took a week-long vacation and is expected to return to work on August 22nd.

Japan is grappling with its seventh wave of COVID-19, caused by the rapidly spreading BA.5 subtype of the Omicron variant. The number of new COVID-19 cases has surged to record highs, impacting businesses in the world's third-largest economy. To date, Japan has recorded a total of 17 million COVID-19 cases, including 36.833 deaths.
